Sri Ram Navami April 20-4-2013 - When is Shri Rama Navami in 2013?

Sri Ram Navami is celebrated on April 20 2013 (Saturday). Shri Ram took birth at noon on 'Shukla paksha' Navami, (ninth day from Amavasya) in the Chaitra month.

Lord Vishnu took avatar as Lord Ram to destroy the demon Ravan and uphold Dharma. Sri Rama Navami marks the end of nine-day Chaitra-Navratri celebrations.

Sri Ram Navami is also the day when Sri Ram married Sita. 'Sree Sitarama Kalyana Mahotsav' is held in many places to mark this occasion. 

Sri Ram Navami Celebration:

At many places, statues or images of Lord Ram will be placed in cradles and swung with devotion using flower ropes.

Akhand Paath Pravachanam i.e., continuous recitals of Ramayana will begin days in advance. Singing of bhajan, devotional keertans will be held at many places.

At temples special homams, abhishekam, puja, aarti will be done amidst the chanting of Vedic mantras. Special flowers and fruits are offered to Lord Ram.

Lakhs of devotees will throng the temple to have the darshan of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita. Utsav Murthi of Lord Rama will bless devotees in the mada veethis of Temple.

Special Tariff Voucher's (STV's) for Voice can be categorized into Limited and Unlimited. BSNL Prepaid Customers can use any STV to reduce the Tariff of Voice Calls, SMS, ISD, and Data categories of 2G/3G AP Circle and Corporate GSM Mobile Prepaid Plan Services according to the customer requirement. Only one voucher will recharge from each category at a time.

Cranberries - Nutritive value fruit

The smaller cranberry's botanical name, vaccinium oxycoccos, comes from the Latin vacca, meaning cow because cows seem to be fond of them. Oxycoccos refers to the sharp leaves of the plant. This variety is primarily known in Europe.

In North America, the large-berry variety is V. macrocarpon, from macro which means large, with oval leaves. The English word cranberry is the shortened version of craneberry, which came from the plant's flowers that dip down and resemble the head of a crane. These birds are also fond of the berries which grow in bogs where cranes make their home.

In Canada, cranberries are often referred to by their Amerindian name, atoca. Cranberries are also known as bounceberries, because they literally bounce if dropped when fresh and bearberry, since bears also love them. Highbush cranberries (Viburnum trilobum) are a completely different fruit of the honeysuckle family, although similar in appearance.

Highbush cranberries grow on a shrub with pointed leaves where cranberries grow on a vine with oval leaves. Highbush cranberries have a single seed which is not eaten. They can be used interchangebly in any recipe using pureed cranberries, once the seeds have been removed using a sieve. The Pilgrims learned all about cranberries from the Native Americans, who recognized the natural preservative power (benzoic acid) in the berries and often mixed them into pemmican (dried meat mixture) to extend its shelf life. Cranberry sauce came into the picture via General Ulysses S. Grant who ordered it served to the troops during the seige of Petersburg in 1864.

Cranberry sauce was first commercially canned in 1912 by the Cape Cod Cranberry Company which marketed the product as "Ocean Spray Cape Cod Cranberry Sauce." A merger with other growers evolved into the well-known Ocean Spray corporation now famous for their cranberry products.

There's a good reason why cranberry juice is recommended for urinary tract infections. In 1998, researchers at Rutgers found that cranberry juice prevents E. coli bacteria from sticking to the cells of the urinary tract, so it flushes out of the body in the urine. (Note: If you think you have such an infection, be sure to seek medical attention. Do not self-treat.) Cranberries also contain a potent vasodilator which opens up bronchial tubes, and is a good source of Vitamin C to help enhance immunity and aid in calcium absorption.

Your cranberry juice can be seen in all the Hypermarkets in tetra packs distributed by DABUR INDIA , branded as 'REAL' fruit juice. And ofcourse the liquor worshippers can have it in ' Cranberry Bacardi Breezer '

Its only the other day amongst the medley of Mango, Chikoo, Guava, Strawberry, Litchi, Orange - (the commoners) stumbled upon Cranberry-the ' face in the crowd ' at Spencers ! A stinging sweet and sour taste which re-kindles many a taste in your bud !

My Boss in fact has a fad for Cranberry Bacardi - & has no penchant for the 'heavy stuff' which we guzzle.

Hence made me browse thru scores of Cranberry archives before I thought of sharing this for the benefit our friends.

Craizins are soaked in sugar syrup and then dried. They taste like raisins. Their bright red colour looks attractive in salads and their tartness adds to its zing.

Alcohol and weight gain can be a problematic combination that we often forget about.
Drinking alcohol often leads to eating more food than normal, like that late night trip to the chip-shop after a drinking session. This, when added to the calorific value of those drinks, inevitably leads to weight gain.
Alcohol robs our bodies of vital vitamins and nutrients. It is also a diuretic which makes us want to pee a lot when drinking.  This combination leads to the brain looking for a carbohydrate boost after drinking alcohol hence the late night raiding of the fridge......or worse still the visit to the chippy, pizza, or kebab shop!
If you’re concerned about weight gain you should consider cutting down your alcohol intake.
Alcoholic drinks often contain more calories than we think.
As a quick guide to calories & alcohol:
-  One 750ml bottle of red wine is equal to 510 calories or a McDonalds quarter pounder with cheese (a bottle of white has 555 calories).
-  One pint of Cider is equal to 200 calories on average or a 40g bag of Doritos Extreme Chilli Heatwave.
-  One can of strong lager is equal to 240 calories or a 49g bar 0f Cadburys Fruit & Nut.
-  One bottle of Alco pops (Bacardi Breezer, Smirnoff Ice, etc) is equal to around 170 calories on average, or half of a Dominos,10-inch ultimate pepperoni feast Pizza.
-  A 25ml measure of whisky is equal to 55 calories or a Kit Kat finger.
-  A 70cl bottle of whisky is equal to 1800 calories equal to more than 2 meat samosas followed by a chicken tikka masala meal with pilau rice & a nan bread (1700 calories on average).
