Early life

Mahesh Babu was born in Chennai, to Telugu Cinema actor Ghatamaneni Siva Rama Krishna and Smt. Indira Devi on 9 August 1975.[18] He is the younger brother of actor turned producer Ramesh Babu Ghattamaneni.[19] He also has two elder sisters, Padmavathi and actress-producer Manjula Ghattamaneni and one younger sister Priyadarshini.[20] All siblings have acted in films as child artistes. Mahesh's childhood was spent mostly in Madras under the care of his maternal grandmother, Smt. Durgamma, and the rest of his family.[21][22]

His father made sure all the children spent sufficient time with him on location and on his film sets, especially during holidays. Many times, Mahesh has said that this was where his interest for acting began.[23] The film sets were a second playground and he did not hesitate to face the camera when asked to do a small role in his brother Ramesh Babu's debut film, Needa, at the age of four.[23] He acted in seven of his father's films as a child actor.

Mahesh studied at St. Bede's School in Chennai while continuing to attend his dad's filming during holidays. Tamil film actor Surya was one of his schoolmates.[24] Mahesh obtained an Honours Degree in Commerce from Loyola College, Chennai.[25]
Personal life

Mahesh dated Bollywood actress and former Femina Miss India Namrata Shirodkar for five years.[26] She was his co-star in the movie Vamsi. They got married on 10 February 2005 in Mumbai.[27] They have two children, son Gautam Krishna (born 31 August 2006) and daughter Sitara (born 20 July 2012).[28][29]
Career
Early career (1979–1990)

He started his acting career by playing a small role in his brother Ramesh Babu's debut film, Needa under Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao's direction in 1979, at the age of 4.[30] In 1983, at the age of 8, director Kodi Ramakrishna requested him to play a role in the film Poratam since they were having difficulty casting for the role of Krishna's sibling. This was his first full length feature film.[31] Producer and director Dhoondy, one of the early backers of Krishna in his struggling days, watched a preview of the movie and was stunned to find out he was Krishna's own son and remarked that there was a spark in him and he would become an excellent artist.[32] True to that prognostication, Mahesh became successful as a child artist through varied roles. In Sankharavam (1987) he faced the cameras with his father directing him for the first time.[33] Veteran director A. Kodandarami Reddy directed him and his brother Ramesh for Bazaar Rowdy (1988), where he won accolades for his acting.[34] Mugguru Kodukulu (1988) saw him again team up with his brother and father, the father directing them all this time.[35] Gudachari 117 (1989) reunited Mahesh with his first film director Kodi Ramakrishna in a James Bond type of flick for which his dad, the lead in the movie, was famous.[36] Koduku Diddina Kapuram (1989), directed by Krishna again, had Mahesh in a dual role.[37] Balachandrudu and Anna Tammudu (1990) saw the teenaged Mahesh Babu completing his first innings on celluloid after which he concentrated on his studies and went out of the public eye while letting nature take its course through the awkward adolescent years.[38]

After the unsatisfying box office run of Khaleja, Mahesh starred in Srinu Vaitla's Dookudu which was a blockbuster.[77] He played the role of an honest cop and his performance was well appreciated by critics. Sify.com wrote "Mahesh Babu`s role, particularly in the action episodes, rocks. Even in emotional scenes too, the hero looks superb, drawing applause from the audience. Coupled with this, Mahesh thrills with his comedy timing. Going by the story, Mahesh Babu donned two different attires, impressive in both and playing them to perfection."[78] Dookudu completed a successful run in 152 centres after 50 days and is supposedly the second highest grossing Telugu film after Maghadheera (With 660 million Share world wide).[79] CNN-IBN for the year 2011, declared him as the Actor of the Year and Dookudu as the Hit of the Year in a survey conducted for Telugu films.[80] He also won his third Filmfare Best Actor Award (Telugu) for his performance in the movie.[81]

The film, directed by Puri Jagannadh and produced by RR Movie Makers, released worldwide on 13 January 2012.[82] He played a complete Negative role similar to an anti hero and he received huge critical acclaim for his performance. The Hindu wrote "The film has no frills, no vulgar wastage and the hero is practically in every frame; you hear only his voice, he looks good, sounds good, he also steals the comedian's job." It added "The thrills for the audience, amoral enjoyment arrives with every step that Surya (Mahesh) climbs, he has the uncanny ability to deceive, to lie convincingly on all scales, as though this was second nature. Yet he is compelling when he speaks the truth. Mahesh plays it straight."[83] Similar to his previous release, it took the largest worldwide opening[84] by collecting INR187.3 million on the first day[85] and INR 629.4 million worldwide in the first week.[86] For the first time in his career, Mahesh along with the director Puri Jagannadh lent his vocals for a song in the project.[87] According to certain reports, Mahesh emerged as the highest paid actor in South India after Rajnikanth.[88]

After doing an all-round entertaining character in Dookudu and terrific character of a ruthless angry young man in Businessman, Mahesh has selected a nice family guy role in this movie. The character is playful most of the times and highly intense in a few conflict scenes. It's a right career move for Mahesh Babu.".[91][92]

Almost after a year's gap, his next project 1: Nenokkadine under the direction of Sukumar released on 10 January 2014. The film, produced by 14 Reels Entertainment has debutante Kriti Sanon acting opposite him and the film was launched on 12 February 2012.[93][94] He also hired Hollywood trainer Kris Gethin as his personal trainer.[95] The film opened to mixed reviews but Mahesh received huge acclaim for his performance as a Revenge seeking Rock star suffering from Integration Disorder. Sify.com wrote "Mahesh Babu is the sole reason as to why you should watch the film. He gives one of his best performances. His presence and performance drives the movie despite hollow proceedings. He has built up his body and transformed it to look fit. Through out the film he maintains consistency. Watch out for his acting in pre-interval sequences."[96] After 1: Nenokkadine his other movie Aagadu has also got released in the same year on 19 September 2014 [97] directed by Srinu Vaitla in which Tamannaah shared screen with him.He has been awarded Times desirable man of the year 2013-14.
