Hyderabad, Sept. 12: Former cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin’s son Ayazuddin remained “very critical” and on ventilator after a high-speed motorbike accident yesterday that killed his cousin.
“The patient (Ayaz) continues to be in a very critical condition and is currently on a ventilator. He has multi-organ failure and is being supported with medication and other treatment to maintain his vital functions,” said a medical bulletin issued by Apollo Hospital where the 19-year-old is admitted.
“The prognosis and outcome are guarded due to the severity of the injury and continued instability.”
Ayaz was testing the new sports bike when it skidded. His cousin and Azhar’s nephew Ajmal-ur-Rehman, 16, who was riding pillion when the accident happened, was buried last night.
Dr Hariprasad, who is heading the multi-speciality team treating Ayaz, said his left kidney was not functioning. “There is bleeding still in the left liver and left lung and the patient had injuries at two points on his hips and three locations on his spine.”
Hariprasad said doctors performed an atherectomy to remove blood clots from Ayaz’s lungs and the teenager had so far received 80 units of blood. “He was brought here in a coma and continues to be in the same state even now.”
Late in the evening, Hariprasad told TV channels that fresh neurological assessments were being made to assess Ayaz’s brain condition.
Doctors suspect significant brain dysfunction caused by anoxia, a total decrease in the level of oxygen, during the period when Ayaz was in a state of collapse. “Right now we are conducting the neurological tests,” Hariprasad said.
Azhar, who flew back from London, reached the hospital early this morning. Azhar’s first wife and Ayaz’s mother Naureen is said to be on her way from America where she moved after her second marriage.
Several politicians, including former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu, Union minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and MIM legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi, visited the hospital today.
In a joint statement, Azhar and Ajmal’s father Khaleeq-ur-Rehman denied reports of any police complaint filed against Ayaz by Khaleeq-ur-Rehman. The two requested the media not to heed such false rumours.
Sports and Bollywood personalities prayed for Ayaz’s recovery. “May hope and the power of our collective prayers work on Mohd Azharuddin’s son…” actor Boman Irani wrote on Twitter.
“Prayers with Mohammed Azharuddin’s son…and may Allah grant his nephew a place in jannat...” wrote tennis star Sania Mirza.
“…All I can do is pray,” wrote cricketer Yuvraj Singh.
