Shuddh Desi Romance sails ahead at box office, Zanjeer proves to be a disaster

This week's Chopra vs Chopra battle ended with Parineeti Chopra's Shuddh Desi Roamce clearly scoring over Priyanka's Zanjeer.

Shuddh Desi Romance has grossed Rs.23.27 crore on its firs weekend while Zanjeer has proven to be quite a disaster with a collection of just Rs.10.16 crore.

Parineeti and Sushant Singh Rajput starrer opened to a decent response on Friday collecting Rs.6.45 crore and picked up well on Saturday and Sunday earning Rs.7.90 crore and Rs.8.92 crore respectively while Zanjeer collected Rs.3.58 crore in the first day further slipping to Rs.2.89 crore on Saturday and then picking a bit with Rs.3.69 crore on Sunday.

Priyanka's Zanjeer, made on a budget of Rs.70 crore, got panned by the critics and audience while Shuddh Desi Romance, that was made on a budget of Rs.30 crore, impressed critics and audience for its fresh cast and storyline.



Also Shuddh Desi Romance opened to 1050 screens in the domestic market wheras Zanjeer opened to 2085 screens.

Parineeti Chopra is ecstatic with the response to the film and says she knew it would work ever since she read the script.

"When I read the script I was sure that this is going to be a very entertaining film. I was happy that Maneesh and Adi (Aditya Chopra from YRF) offered me this film because after 'Ishaqzaade' I wanted to do something different and 'Shuddh Desi Romance' clicked," Parineeti said here at a Nivea event.



"It has released and people are liking it, the reviews are good and all the performances and Jaideep (Sahni, scriptwriter) and Maneesh's work is being appreciated. When there are a lot of messages and missed calls on your phone, you like it. So, I am very happy," added the 24-year-old.

A Harry Potter locale, Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na-style storytelling, the melodious styling of High School Musical, inspiration from Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar and the typical Johar drama, that’s Student of the Year. Despite being an uncanny mix of all these characterstics, K Jo manages to hold your attention throughout the film.
SOTY is set in St Teresa’s High School (St T’s as they call it) in Dehradun, the most reputed school in the country, where students either come from a filthy rich background, or are on scholarship – the Tatas and the Batas, they say. Here kids either drive a Ferrari or stylish bikes; girls don miniskirts, designer clothes and are dressed well enough for a party each day; and flirting, dating, break ups, patch ups are all a part of their normal life. But every year, the students compete for one competition with all their might – Student of the year.
Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan) is a typical spoilt kid. His father is the biggest business tycoon in the country and is a trustee of St. T’s. Shanaya Singhania (Alia Bhatt) is a glamorous but innocent young girl who has only fashion designers on her mind and comes from a broken home. Rohan and Shanaya are childhood sweethearts. Shanaya loves attention, and Rohan gives her just what she wants. But she is quite aware of his flirtatious behaviour. Life is perfect till Abhimanyu Singh (Malhotra) enters their world with an entry like that of Hrithik Roshan in K3G (remember Deewana Hai Dekho?). No, he’s not as rich…he is an orphan who is in St. T’s on a sports scholarship. Of course the popular rich brat has ego clashes with this small town boy, but they land up becoming best friends till love tears them apart.
Rohan and Abhimanyu are inseparable as they confide in each other, their deepest secrets. While both suffer when it comes to family matters, they are the most popular students of St T’s. Abhimanyu and Shanaya fall for each other, and hell breaks loose, all this, while they compete for Student of the year title with vigour.
SOTY is not a new story – two boys fall for one girl and compete for one trophy. The characters are archetypal – a rich brat becomes friends with a bechara garib boy and in between is the K3G’s naive Poo-type blonde. It’s the presentation that attracts you and the stellar performances that grab your attention. One thing is clear – it is not a realistic script. Then again, the filmmakers of SOTY never promised it would be one, unlike other filmmakers these days.
K Jo has done a marvelous job when it comes to grooming these three debutants in their acting skills. Though Alia has very little role to play, with all the attention on the leading boys. She leaves a mark with her glamorous presence. K Jo does a fab job in presenting her as a doll. Varun shines throughout the movie with a very a resilient performance. His dancing skills are commendable. Malhotra too has done an extremely good job and his presence is strongly felt throughout the film.
The other characters are a treat to watch. Rishi Kapoor steals the show as a happy and gay (literally) principle of St T’s. He has once again proved that he is not just a brilliant actor, but a versatile artist. Others like Ronit Roy, Ram Kapoor and Farida Jalal are established performers and have done justice to their roles.
Karan Johar’s direction is commendable, as always. Yet it fails to bring anything new to the movie. The entire film has K Jo’s trademarks which makes it more or less like a combination of all his previous films. Ayananka Bose’s cinematography blends well with the larger-than-life setting. The editing is smooth.
The songs are the high points of the film. Alia’s introduction with Gulabi aankhein and other songs like Yeh chaand sa roshan chehra, Radha, Disco deewane are all chart busters. Vishal-Shekhar deserve a a plaudits for these foot-tapping numbers. The choreography of each number is quite admirable. Ishq Wala Love, the romantic track has excellent music, but could’ve been better if the lyrics made any sense.
All in all, SOTY is not something you would want to miss if the surreal setting with bubble gum romance is your calling. The performances make this film a great watch. It’s a treat for all K Jo fans and if you didn’t really enjoy Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, K3G and other such films by the director, you can easily skip this one.

Mausam Movie Review

Ever since the first buzz of Mausam hit the news, it fast became one of the most-awaited films of 2011. Mausam brings with it two very promising firsts: A first-time director in the critically acclaimed actor Pankaj Kapur and a fresh new jodi in Kapur’s son Shahid Kapoor and star-daughter Sonam Kapoor. The intrigue and anticipation surrounding the film increased with the thought of the father and son duo jointly working on the same project for the first time. Over the past few months prior to release the movie has been caught up in a number of controversies. However, now that Mausam has finally hit the theaters, does it prove to be worth the wait?
Mausam’s story has been branded as and is a story about love that spans across a number of continents, years and, perhaps most importantly, through different seasons. Starting off in 1992, the film begins with Harry’s (Shahid) story. Harry is a young village boy residing in Mallukot and has a fascination with speed and trains. He is living his youth with his accompanying friends. When a neighbour’s (Supriya Pathak) niece, Aayat (Sonam) is forced to come and stay with her aunt from Kashmir as a matter of safety, Harry falls in love at first sight. The two share some sweet and heart-felt moments with one another before Aayat and her family are forced to move to Mumbai. Harry is left heartbroken but he is also seen to receive a letter about his entry into the army. What follows is a story whereby the two lovers meet at various intervals every few years in different places and under different circumstances.
It would be wrong to say that Mausam is your average, run-of-the-mill Bollywood love story. It is very much a movie which stands for everything Bollywood signifies about, minus the taaza masala. The first half of the movie is centred on the life of Harry and Aayat and their Mallukot activities, including the wedding of Harry’s sister and also the visit of Aayat’s refugee father. It can be said that this part of the film is probably the most watchable and this is because of the portrayal of innocence, mischief and sweet obsession that the two protagonists’ share with one another.
You’re reminded of a love story which could very easily have fit perfectly in the years it was set in and proved to be a huge success at the box office. However, hold your horses. The second half of the movie is a huge disappointment and doesn’t follow on as promisingly as the first half yearns for it to. Fate brings the two characters together a number of times but as each meeting happens, the plot becomes less and less realistic. Fate is thought to instigate these meetings but even fate wouldn’t work its wonder that many times.
Performance-wise, Shahid Kapoor is perhaps the films sole saviour. Arguably, the actor holds the whole movie on his own shoulders. Kapoor plays the role of a Harry with such perfection that you’re left feeling somewhat sad that the movie doesn’t quite live up to his immensely praiseworthy rendition. Sonam Kapoor as Aayat is believable but doesn’t quite seem to strike an uncritical chord. It’s difficult to pinpoint the reason for this but could possibly be because this is the first time she has tackled this kind of character in this sort of movie.
Pankaj Kapur, in his directorial debut, has given the kinds of settings and locations in Mausam which have huge significance in the “seasonal” look the movie needed. As Kapur has also written the movie, his understanding and vision seem to go a long way and this can be seen in the overall feel of the movie and the intricacies he has sought to show in each of his characters, both individually and in the relationships they have with each other. Overall, Kapur has achieved a very accomplished effort in his first movie and it is yet to be seen whether we will see this talent of his at the forefront again.
With Mausam, you are made to travel from Mallukot to Scotland and from Switzerland to Ahmedabad and you take with you Harry’s and Aayat’s pyaar. The biggest and most important aspect of Mausam is that the love story within should have been seen to resonate and it would have if it hadn’t been complicated with the various periods the two have to spend apart. It is this and the number of times that the two come together which gets tedious about makes what should have been a simple story unnecessarily long-winded.
If, like most Bollywood fans, you love a good love story then Mausam (minus the seasons) will make you want to fall in love again. However, if what you’re after is a story which you could list for years to come as one of the most touching love stories given by Indian cinema, I’m sorry to say that Mausam doesn’t quite hit the spot. Although a strong and impactful love story, the movie sadly seems to get lost in its own fat

QuickFlick: Shark Night 3D

After a three year absence from her Louisiana lake house, Tulane student Sara (Sara Paxton) returns with six friends to find that the lake she once knew has changed for the worse — it’s now infested with sharks. Shark Night 3D, like most other thriller movies, has the audience on their toes waiting for each character to meet their bloody fate.  However, Shark Night’s PG-13 rating ensures the graphic violence is kept to a minimum, disappointing those who were anticipating buckets of gore.
On the way to Sara’s secluded lake house outside of a small fishing town, the lead and her friends encounter Sara’s ex-boyfriend Dennis (Chris Carmack) and his not-so-friendly sidekick Red (Joshua Leonard). Red roughs up the gang and sets off an uneasy tension between the two groups. Once on the island, Sara encounters Sheriff Sabin (Donal Logue), a local law enforcement officer who is friendly but not that helpful.
The sharks in Shark Night 3D are vicious CGI creatures, but they do not stack up to the scare quality of past Hollywood sharks such as the titular monster in Jaws. The antagonists are identified in the film after a wakeboarding accident, which kicks off a race to help the injured Malik (Sinqua Walls) survive while the other six characters struggle for their own lives. Despite the fact that the characters in the film go to a prominent university, they are still clueless enough to still get in the shark-infested water, where they are obviously not able to out-swim or out-maneuver the ruthless sharks.
Like most horror movies, the fast-paced music and underwater shots are a dead give-away to preceding events. The deaths of the students are not shocking, mainly because the PG-13 rating limits any noteworthy bloodshed. The love subplot does not give Shark Night 3D any additional emotional depth whatsoever; it only adds to the predictability of the scheme and characters of the film. The idea of love gone wrong assists in the film’s plot structure, but is almost immediately identifiable. The 3D effects do not add anything extra to film, except for the occasional shark-out-of-water scenes that do little to frighten the audience.

QuickFlick: African Cats

Last year on Earth Day, Oceans was released in theaters across America. The previous year, it was Earth. For 2011, Disneynature Productions celebrated Earth Day with their newest release, African Cats, a film dedicated to the stories of two very different species of felines that roam the savannahs of Africa: cheetahs and lions. Although the two cats share the big screen, they are extremely different from one another. Cheetahs, as narrator Samuel L. Jackson explains, survive alone, (with the exception of a mother and her young cubs, until the cubs are able to fend for themselves) while lions interact in the opposite way.
Here’s the set-up: Sita, the solo adult cheetah, has five adorable cubs to tend to. African Cats portrays not only her struggles to raise and teach her young the ways of the world, but also how incredibly endearing and playful the cubs are while they grow into adults.
The lion side of the story is a bit more complicated. African Cats follows two different prides. One pride has only one adult male, Fang, and the other has one reigning adult male, Kali, with three nearly adult sons. This causes a bit of tension once the two clans interact with each other. It also tests how close the bonds of the prides truly are.
All three stories are separate at first, but they all eventually collide with one another as the movie progresses.
Directors Alastair Fothergill and Keith Scholey collaborated to somehow mold hunting scenes and video of wildcats devouring carcasses into G-rated material. The cinematography is the most intriguing aspect of this documentary; the videographers captured seemingly unrealistic scenes and focus on the interactions of the cats with other species, the animals’ strong and prominent shoulders, and the bonds they create with one another.
Jackson’s compelling narration, combined with the sometimes-lighthearted, sometimes-intense script, and the beautifully breathtaking views of Africa and its inhabitants, makes for an enticing story for audiences of all ages.

Mumbai, Sep 13 (IANS) To woo the Southern audience, Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan will release his much awaited sci fi film 'Ra.One' in Tamil and Telugu as well.

'The film will be released in Tamil and Telugu as well. It will release simultaneously when the Hindi version of the film will release. The Tamil and Telugu versions are already ready. The dubbing is done,' Shah Rukh told reporters here on the sidelines of the music launch of the film.

'We might release it in German and few other languages as well. I'm in talks with Eros for this,' he added.

'Ra. One' that is slated for a Diwali release and will be available for viewing in both 3D and 2D formats, will present Shah Rukh as a super hero for the first time. Directedby Anubhav Sinha, the film also stars Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal in pivotal characters.
